Buttongate - the aftermath #f1

Now we know that Jenson has signed for McLaren, the rumour mill has gone into overdrive trying to work out who Mercedes will take on.

It's pretty certain that Rosberg has left Williams in order to move to Brawn.  As a German driver he's been closely watched and was considered in the early part of the year as a replacement for Kovalainen at McLaren until the option of buying up Brawn came along.

The second slot could prove more interesting.  The safest option is Nick Heidfeld.  He was a product of the Mercedes young driver programme and was helped through F3000 into F1, only to be overlooked as the replacement for Hakinnen in favour of Kimi.  While never regarded as having stunning pace in the mould of Lewis, Kimi or Alonso, he always manages to grab a haul of points, and a few podiums when the opportunity arises such as in the rain in Malaysia this year.  Hardly a declaration of intent from a new manufacturer team though.

Ironically his main competition could end up being the man who took away the McLaren drive.  Will lightning strike twice.  Kimi is reported to be earning £17m for sitting on his sofa (that's alot of partying!) and will only get £10m in severance from Ferrari should he find another drive in F1, so it's going to have to be worth his while to sign a new contract.  It's hard to know whether he's in it for the money, or in it for the wins having not been picked up at McLaren.  One would expect a driver desperate to win races and titles to jump at the chance at McLaren regardless of salary, so maybe he had another agenda.  He worked with Haug, the Mercedes F1 boss, during his stint at McLaren so maybe there was a long term plan to get him into Brawcerdes

However there's another outside bet that might have legs. Mercedes want an experienced big name star German driver, that Ross Brawn rates highly and is highly motivated.  What was that guy called, drove for Ferrari a few years back and won a race or 91...

Kobayashi isn't giving up (again)

Again showing he doesn't know the meaning of defeat, Kobayashi is again showing the fighting spirit that we love in F1 drivers and refusing to accept his F1 career is over.

With the pull-out of Toyota and subsequent announcement that they won't be selling the team as a going concern putting the brakes on his aspirations there, Kobayashi is now hoping to link with another famous name - Lotus.

I think This is a good move for him and also for Lotus which I think will be a surprise package next year, should they also take on Trulli as is widely rumoured. They would have both an exceptional (when the mood takes him) and and experienced development driver in Trulli, but they would also have a young gun with fighting spirit which could teach Trulli how to get his head right.

Possibly the same perfect balance that Williams have gone for?

Stay tuned...

Sutil overvaluing himself?

First we had Kimi and now Sutil seemingly thinking he's worth more than he probably is.

"It is believed Sutil is holding out for a pay-rise, with Zimmerman saying only that "Adrian has developed into an experienced Formula One driver."

Well you could saw he's experienced in that he's done more seasons than saw Buemi or Kobayashi but he's hardly at the level of former world champ Kimi, especially when you consider Sutil has trouble staying on the circuit both when racing others or on his own.

Considering many young drivers would give their right arm for a go in F1 perhaps he should be glad the team still want him and aren't just trying to get Fisi-only-good-in-crap-teams-cella back to partner Liuzi.

Is Kimi over-valuing himself?

"Toyota Team President John Howett admits that Kimi Raikkonen is unlikely to join the team because the driver is asking for too much money."

Now we all know that Kimi probably burns more cash partying than most people, but didn't he just get a massive payoff from Ferrari to make way for Alonso?  I fear that Kimi (or his management) is probably pushing the envelope and he may well find in the current market that he may find himself still standing when the music stops... possibly holding a can of Red Bull?
